The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — A New Category Could Fix That

Whenever a major honors show nears, there’s always a demand to include fresh award types to honor underappreciated efforts and delight the hearts of fans with niche passions.

A fellow writer has already made for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, which is a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request remains most pressing and significant. The demand is this: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and typically generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason cinema institutions avoid this approach. But it is a necessary evil within the realm of gaming, showing incredible range they hardly constitute one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these award types effectively encompass a lot of ground, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

Not so for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. What category would fit them within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers launched regularly without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated completely in 2014
  • Another creative title was excluded during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked in 2021
  • Just some brain-teasers barely qualified for independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

Frequently they represent compact experiences, but the art in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles count as most engaged experiences globally continuing this trend for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with well-known building titles competing to become highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. It would be easy to populate a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these represent titles without proper classification in important events. Puzzle game makers are working at the demanding boundary interactive creation, producing among the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
